A century-old historic hotel in the heart of Gympie is in line for a new lease of life as the home of the city’s Century 21 real estate agency.
Developer The Korner, which is directed by Gympie Century 21 Platinum Agents founder Billy Mitchell, has lodged plans with the Gympie Regional Council to transform the building that sits at the top of Upper Mary St where it meets Channon St.
The building has previously been home to Gympie’s Commercial Hotel, an real estate agency, and a series of restaurants and cafes.
The plans, which include an application to install seven advertising signs across the venue, reveal Mr Mitchell is planning to relocate his agency there.
Details are not available as to what the move, if approved, would mean for Century 21’s existing premises at the corner of Monkland and Nash Streets.
The application says the building is heritage listed under the Gympie council planning scheme, but not included on the state heritage list.
It was reportedly built in 1892, replacing a hotel previously established on the site in 1871.
Its extensive history includes not only its run as the Commercial Hotel, a stint as the home for Gympie Regional Realty, and serving as several popular cafes and restaurants.
Mr Mitchell opened the Gympie Century 21 outlet in 2011, following an early career in hospitality management, first with an office at Tin Can Bay and then the existing branch in Gympie.
In 2023, his growing real estate empire expanded north to Maryborough.
Attempts were made to contact Mr Mitchell.
