HEATHER Kroesen loved the end unit at Gladstone Affordable Housing so much she looked at it four times.

She was one of more than 50 people who inspected the new Shearwater complex at Glenlyon St at the weekend.

There are 12 units available to eligible residents, ranging from $172 to $279 a week in rent.

Mrs Kroesen, a legal secretary, was particularly interested in a $279/week, two bedroom unit with a deck and study.

"I live on my own and I've got two grandkids so they could stay with me," she said.

"I think the units are gorgeous. Everything is fresh and new."

Mrs Kroesen moved to Gladstone from South Africa last year to be closer to her son Damon and his children.

She lives in a unit in Clinton and is paying the same amount as the modern units at Shearwater.

She said she hasn't rented before, owning two houses in South Africa.

"It's the first time in my life I haven't owned a house," she said.

"It was quite a shock, the rental prices here. So I saw this building go up and I came along to check it out."

The location would also suit Mrs Kroesen.

"I work at VAJ Byrne and Co Lawyers right behind the complex," Mrs Kroesen said.

"If you spit, you could hit my building (from the GAH building). I would walk to work."

Mrs Kroesen said she would definitely be putting in a rental application.
