A minor argument in a Gladstone pub ended in a horrific ordeal for a woman who was choked by her partner when they got home, a court heard.
Nick Michael Rogers, 31, pleaded guilty in Gladstone District Court on Monday to six charges including two counts of wilful damage.
Crown prosecutor Geoffrey Wong told the court Rogers’ offending occurred on August 23, 2020.
“Both the complainant and Rogers had been drinking at a bar where an argument broke out between the couple,” Mr Wong said.
“Once home, Rogers walked up to the complainant in the kitchen and grabbed her by the neck and squeezed for about 10 seconds.
“During that time the complainant could not breath, she felt unwell and told him to stop.”
Mr Wong said that while holding her throat Rogers bit the complainant’s face twice which caused cuts to her lip and eye socket.
“She managed to lock herself in her bedroom, but Rogers kicked the door open and grabbed her by the throat again but not as hard as the first time,” he said.
“He then smashed a large television on the ground and pushed the complainant into the ensuite bathroom which caused damage to the shower door.”
Eventually, the complainant was able to leave the house but returned a short time later for an unknown reason and was met by Rogers again.
“Once inside, Rogers grabbed her in a bear hug and refused to let go, only doing so when instructed to by police who arrived just moments prior,” Mr Wong said.
“At some point during all of his offending, Rogers damaged the complainant’s car which is count six.”
Judge Catherine Muir said Rogers’ offending was shocking, persistent, violent and unprovoked.
“Committed against the person you were supposed to be in a loving relationship with,” she said.
Rogers was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment, wholly suspended for four years.
He was ordered to pay $5000 restitution to the complainant and convictions were recorded.
