A man punched his own mother in the face and put an off-duty police officer in a headlock in a violent incident, a court heard.

Jeremy Paul John Bartholdt pleaded guilty to seven charges in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on Friday including serious assault police causing bodily harm and obstructing a police officer.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins detailed Bartholdt’s offending, the worst of which occurred on May 13, around 11.25pm.

At that time Bartholdt’s mother walked out to her front yard where he was socialising with his friends.

Bartholdt, 25, started to swear and make threats towards his mother, including to kill her.

He then punched her in the jaw and elbowed her in the temple, before grabbing and ripping her shirt.

Police arrived a short time later and saw Bartholdt on the street engaged in a heated discussion with his mother, where he called her ‘a massive c—’.

Police intervened and threatened to use a taser or pepper spray as a deterrent to which Bartholdt replied, ‘if you spray me in the face mate, then my elbow is going to hit your face’.

Within a few seconds of threatening police, Bartholdt punched an off-duty officer to the left side of his face.

Bartholdt then grabbed the officer with his right arm and put him in a headlock, taking him to the ground before forcing himself on top of him while maintaining the grip.

A court heard that during the assault the victim felt applied pressure and force around his neck and throat area before a second officer saved him from further harm.

Bartholdt was transported to the Gladstone watch house where he was charged and released on bail.

As a result of the assault the victim had to take time off work, seek medical treatment and return to work on light duties due to hand and shoulder injuries.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and sentenced Bartholdt to 18 months imprisonment with a parole release date of November 26, after one third of the sentence had been served.
