Joe Hildebrand: Four Corners not the only Trump bashers in town

The hypocrisy of the new liberal left never ceases to shock, writes Joe Hildebrand.

‘I’ve never seen stupidity like this’: Trump rips into Biden administration

The other day I watched a show in which Donald Trump supporters were mercilessly targeted and written off as though their lives and thoughts meant nothing.

No, I’m not talking about Four Corners, I’m talking about the 2019 movie The Hunt.

For anyone who missed it – and that’s quite a lot of people because the movie was banned – The Hunt is a black comedy about a group of wealthy elites who hunt humans for sport.

This in itself is not a new concept (who could forget Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1993 masterpiece Hard Target?) but this time there’s a twist: The hunters are all urban progressives and the victims are all Donald Trump’s deplorables.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this caused some controversy upon the film’s release, which followed a spate of mass shootings in America.

It’s no wonder that the black comedy The Hunt proved controversial, writes Joe Hildebrand.

Having said that, the release of any film on any day is likely to follow a spate of mass shootings in America.

But the far greater irony is that the film was pulled from cinemas not because of outrage from the left but from the right – including Donald Trump himself. Who says Americans don’t get sarcasm?

This was a massive own goal, because far from being an attack on the right the film is in fact a brutal skewering of the snobbery and hypocrisy of the new liberal left.

This is exquisitely demonstrated in a scene in which the group plots out their homicidal hunting spree while correcting each other for using inappropriate language. A play on the words “trigger warning” comes to mind but I can’t be bothered making it.

Point being, the real targets in the movie aren’t the people being hunted but the hunters themselves. It is the fact that these highly educated and painstakingly tolerant people are incapable of comprehending views they disagree with and see those who hold them as subhuman.

And no, I’m not talking about Four Corners …

Joe Hildebrand is on 2GB Nights with John Stanley on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8pm
