Following the announcement of their electrolyser manufacturing facility in March of 2022, billionaire Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has lodged planning details for its second stage of a green energy project.

The proposed development is a green hydrogen project, which will produce hydrogen using electrolysers manufactured onsite in FFI’s electrolyser manufacturing facility, which is also the world’s largest of its kind.

The second stage of hydrogen production will be constructed in Aldoga, west of Gladstone.

It is estimated the project will have a capital expenditure of $225 million, and create between 20 and 40 jobs in operation and a further 80 to 120 jobs in construction.

The planning was lodged just days before the announcement of a $23 million joint state and federal government investment for Wollongong company Hysata’s renewable hydrogen project at Stanwell Power Station outside of Rockhampton.

The Stanwell project will see the development of an advanced electrolyser, with Australian Renewable Energy Agency delegating more than $20 million in funding to the project, intended to reduce the costs of producing renewable energy as part of a statewide initiative to move to renewables.

Gladstone Regional Council Mayor Matt Burnett said it was exciting times ahead for Central Queensland and the renewable sphere.

“Construction on this project commenced in February 2022 and Stage 1 involves the building of an electrolyser facility that can be expanded based on future growth and demand,” Cr Burnett said.

“We have many opportunities on the horizon, as our region is at the dawn of a new age in terms of hydrogen and renewable energy projects.

“The growth that will naturally come from these projects will be supported in a sustainable manner, guided by our industry-leading Gladstone Region Economic Transition Roadmap that will assist in steering our decision making through to 2032.”
