A Central Queensland man accused of “very serious” domestic violence offences has made a bid for bail.

The 49-year-old appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Friday, May 9, where he applied for bail.

He is facing charges including five counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, and one count each of AOBH while armed/in company, and common assault - all are alleged domestic violence offences.

Police objected to bail and the court heard the man, with a two-page criminal history, was in a show cause situation.

Solicitor Sophie-Lee Oliver said the man would be contesting the charges “entirely”.

Ms Oliver said there had been “some indications” from the complainant that she wished to withdraw her statement in relation to the alleged offences.

“My client has instructed that the relationship is now over,” Ms Oliver said.

Ms Oliver said the man’s only prior breach of bail was in 2000.

“He has been on bail four times previously with no issues.

“He is agreeable to a residential condition - he does have an address in Gladstone.

“I am also instructed by his sister that she is agreeable to have him reside with her, however she is interstate in Sydney.”

Ms Oliver said the man, who was employed, was willing to attend counselling and have no contact with the complainant if granted bail.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said it was alleged the man had committed “very serious” offences and the “strength of the evidence is strong.”

Mr Boyd said if the man was found guilty of these alleged offences, a sentence of imprisonment was not a last resort.

In opposing bail, Mr Boyd said the man was not at risk of spending too much time in custody, and he was an unacceptable risk of committing further offences if granted bail.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan said she found it was “a strong Crown case” and she was not satisfied any conditions could constitute showing cause.

She refused bail and remanded the man in custody.

His matters were adjourned to July 7.
