With news that a new Australian thriller will be filmed in Hervey Bay, it’s time to look back at the other times show business came to the Fraser Coast.

With filming starting this week, Bec Hewitt and Georgie Parker are set to star in 13 Summers and director Tam Sainsbury is thrilled with how it is coming together and the support she has received in bringing the film to the Fraser Coast.

Knowing the Fraser Coast was a possibility as a location, Ms Sainbury came to Hervey Bay to do a location scout for the film and landed on beautiful Dundowran Beach, which she described as the perfect spot.

“It has got exactly the kind of houses, like the big beach house and the beach shack and exactly what we need for the characters and the story,” she said.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said it was an exciting occasion for the region to provide the locations for a film.

“This is an industry I think that has great potential; whether it is the historic streetscapes of Maryborough, our country towns or pristine wilderness, we have many great locations for future productions,” he said.

“The council is very keen to explore ways we can encourage future films here.”

Here are other films that have been shot on the Fraser Coast over the years.

The Reef

The Reef, a $3.5m movie, was about four friends who were forced to swim to a nearby island after their yacht capsized on the Great Barrier Reef.

The movie tells the tale of the cat and mouse game the group plays with a shark that stalks them in open water.

The actors spent a lot of time filming in the waters off Hervey Bay – but they didn’t have to worry about any man-eaters during their stay.

The sharks were added in post-production using real footage of great whites off South Australia.

Subdivision

Filmed on the Fraser Coast, Subdivision focuses on the change a community goes through when city developers take over.

The Delinquents

The Delinquents was set in Bundaberg, but parts of it were filmed in Maryborough.

The story is set in the late 1950s.

Brownie and Lola are deeply in love, but because they are under-age, their parents are against their relationship and try to separate them.

The film was released in Australia on December 21, 1989, to mixed reviews from critics.

It grossed $3,370,650 at the box office in Australia.

An accompanying soundtrack was also released.

Fool’s Gold

The quirky comedy Fool’s Gold was planned to be filmed in the Caribbean, but instead was brought to Queensland because it was feared hurricane season would stall filming.
