There will be room for 150 extra police officers in the Fraser Coast following a multimillion-dollar investment into upgrading the Hervey Bay Police Station.

On Tuesday, April 23 the state government announced a $28m investment into a “major new police facility” in the coastal town.

According to Queensland Police Service, the project will include additional watchouse cells and interview rooms, with more space in the general day room, investigation areas, facility amenities and car park.

The latest announcement comes after a June 2022 promise, which also pegged a $14m dollar investment for the Hervey Bay Police Station, with works on the upgraded facility said to have begun in the following financial year.

“The Palaszczuk government’s record budget includes a further commitment to delivering 2025 extra police personnel over five years and a major investment pipeline of new and upgraded infrastructure and new high-tech equipment to support our world-class police,” Police Minister Mark Ryan said at the time.

The latest announcement also promised a “state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities” according to a joint statement from Premier Steven Miles and Police Minister Mark Ryan.

“The timeline, and commencement date for this project will be announced in the future, after the tender process has been completed,” Mr Ryan said.

The Minister confirmed the project would rebuild the station from “the ground up” giving the site a “new lease on life.”

“The project is part of a record police infrastructure pipeline that supports the biggest investment in police personnel in more than 30 years,” the statement said.

“The Queensland Police Service states that investment will deliver a minimum of 150 extra police officers to the police region that encompasses Hervey Bay.”

Premier Miles said the investment falls under the Queensland Community Safety Plan, which also provides funding aimed at the intervention and prevention of crime.

“Every community across the state deserves to not only be safe, but feel safe,” he said.

“I know that Hervey Bay police officers go above and beyond every day to support their local community and it is only right that we give Hervey Bay police the best possible facilities.”

Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski welcomed the news and the investment into the Fraser Coast region.

“We know the Wide Bay is a growing region and this upgraded facility will be a significant asset not only for the local community but also for our officers and staff,” he said.

“It will help local police better serve the needs of the community through modern and purpose-built facilities.”

“The replacement project future-proofs policing in Hervey Bay.”

The message was echoed by the police minister, who said the investment would support a growth in police personnel for the region and the state.
“It’s about supporting community safety in Hervey Bay and in every community right across Queensland,” Mr Ryan said.

The Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari also welcomed the announcement and said it was an investment he had spent several years calling for.

“Since being elected in late 2020 to represent my local community I have advocated strongly for this project, and this investment by the Miles government recognises that Hervey Bay is a fast-growing regional city and that it is committed to regional Queensland,” he said.

“This is about community safety, building infrastructure, ensuring better services and securing good jobs for our future.’’
