A heavily pregnant young mum has been slammed for “having kids in the middle of this chaos” as she appeared in court for drug dealing.
Sammy-Jo Pavey, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of supplying a dangerous drug when she faced the Hervey Bay District Court on Monday.
The court was told on April 14, 2024, Pavey was talking to an “associate” on Facebook Messenger and arranged a supply of a “half ball”, or 1.75g of meth for an unknown amount of money.
Pavey had later met with the person and had supplied the meth, the court was told.
The following day she had received a message from the associate complaining about the quality of the drugs provided.
On April 17, police had seized Pavey’s phone and found the messages, which led to the charge.
Pavey had spent 70 days in presentence custody, the court was told.
Defence barrister Phil Hardcastle said Pavey had experienced a difficult childhood after losing her father at young age.
She had started smoking cigarettes at 9 and marijuana at 12 years old.
When she was in custody she had been assaulted fairly severely on two occasions while pregnant, he said, and her house had previously burned down.
Mr Hardcastle said Pavey was currently 30 weeks pregnant.
She had previously worked at the Bay Central Tavern and was currently employed doing cleaning.
“She’s just having kids in the middle of this chaos,” Judge William Everson said.
He said Pavey had led something of a tragic life, with her father dying when she was 9, living on the streets and using meth from the age of 15.
He said she had a five-page criminal history and was pregnant with her third child.
Judge Everson said meth was a highly addictive and dangerous drug.
He sentenced Pavey to 12 months in prison with immediate release on parole.
