Finding herself the subject of unwanted advances from a man at a Fraser Coast hotel, and being low on cash, a woman has told a court she stole his laptop and $300 from his wallet so she could escape the situation.

Rebecca Leigh Crimmins, 40, pleaded guilty to one count of stealing when she faced Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The court heard on March 20, 2023, Crimmins was at an address with the man when she left with his $400 laptop and $300 cash from his wallet.

Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, she was seen leaving with the laptop in her arms.

The man later reported the matter to police and they spoke to Crimmins, who declined to participate in an interview.

The court heard Crimmins was currently receiving Jobseeker payments but was trying to get a disability support pension as she had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

The two had only recently met and had a few drinks before the incident, and he began “making some advances at her”, the court heard.

Crimmins did not have enough money to get home and took the laptop and money as a means to leave, it heard.

Magistrate Trinity McGarvie said it was opportunistic offending against someone who’d had some trust in her.

Crimmins was fined $450 and ordered to pay compensation of $700.

A conviction was recorded.

A suspended sentence Crimmins was serving at the time was extended for a month.
