A pregnant young woman facing a charge of assaulting police has gone into premature labour while waiting to face the magistrate at the Maryborough court.
Natalie Hazel Schulte-Duffey, 20, was facing numerous charges including breaching a bail condition, two counts of serious assault – assault/resist/obstruct police officer or person acting in aid of police officer, failure to appear in accordance with an undertaking, serious assault of a police officer by biting or spitting etc and obstructing a police officer when she appeared before Maryborough Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old was waiting for her turn outside the Maryborough Courthouse when she felt a twinge, with the police prosecutor Balam Selvadurai relaying the news of the early onset labour to the court so Ms Schulte-Duffey’s matter could be brought forward.
Ms Schulte-Duffey said she was due to give birth next month and was hoping to have the matter dealt with before her baby arrived.
She told the court her charge of failing to appear in court had happened because she had previously had to go to hospital in relation to her pregnancy.
Ms Schulte-Duffey said she wanted to represent herself rather than have legal representation.
She said she intended to go to hospital immediately after court.
“But not to have the baby,” she said, adding that they were trying to delay the birth of her child.
“I was kind of hoping to get this matter settled before I have this child.”
The case was adjourned until July 23, 2024.
Ms Schulte-Duffey has not entered a plea.
