A man has told a court he intends to turn his life around and become a traffic controller as he was sentenced over a pawn shop deal he should not have done.

A man who was busted after pawning an item that didn’t belong to him has been told he could face imprisonment if he continues offending.

Luke Robert Curry, 42, pleaded guilty to receiving tainted property and dishonestly obtaining a sum of money when he faced Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The court heard a business owner had contacted police and he had noticed a number of items, including a lithium jump starter, were missing from his vehicle.

Detectives started investigating and identified that Curry had attended Cash Converters in Urraween and had pawned a jump starter, getting $80.

It was later confirmed by the business owner that the jump starter missing from his vehicle was the one that had been found, the court heard.

The court heard Curry was not working but was undergoing a course and trying to get a traffic controlling ticket.

He was staying at in a campervan with his father while he tried to secure housing, the court heard.

The court heard Curry had made a poor decision in pawning the item for his financial benefit.

Magistrate Trinity McGarvie said while she would impose a fine for the offending, because of his prior criminal history, he could face terms of imprisonment if he appeared before court on similar offences again.

Curry was fined $1200 and convictions were recorded.
