A man, who allegedly led police on a car chase through Hervey Bay and continued to flee on foot after police stingers blew out his tyres, has fronted court.

A magistrate has denied bail for a man who allegedly led police on a car chase through Kawungan on Monday.

Corey Allan Aitcheson, 30, appeared in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court via videolink on a number of charges, including unlawful use of a vehicle and dangerous operation of a vehicle, on Tuesday.

His appearance came after a series of alleged incidents on Monday, in which police said Mr Aitcheson drove a stolen car along Doolong Road and would not stop, forcing them to deploy stingers (spikes that are placed on the road to puncture tyres).

As tyres on the Landcruiser disintegrated, Mr Aitcheson allegedly continued to drive before the vehicle became bogged on Cod Street.

Police alleged Mr Aitcheson then fled on foot before being arrested soon after.

Mr Aitcheson made an application for bail during his brief court appearance.

Lawyer Daniel Hunter said Mr Aitcheson was living in Point Vernon with his girlfriend.

He said Mr Aitcheson wanted to “be at liberty” to seek legal advice.

The court heard Mr Aitcheson had failed to appear for two court appearances in the past month.

On one occasion it was because he had Covid, the court was told.

Because he had failed to attend court and, as he had been charged with fresh offences while he was in the community, Mr Aitcheson was in a “show cause” position, Magistrate Trinity McGarvie explained.

She said Mr Aitcheson had not demonstrated that he should be allowed bail.

Police Prosecutor, Senior Constable Sonia Edwards, said Mr Aitcheson was an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

Bail was refused and the case was adjourned until June 2.
