A teenager, who used a chair to assault a man during a night out at a pub, has faced Hervey Bay Magistrate’s Court.
Kynan Lee Hutchinson, 18, pleaded guilty to common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm.
The court heard on October 8, Hutchinson was at the Grand Hotel at Childers when he became involved in a verbal dispute.
A co-accused then punched a man, with Hutchinson becoming involved and also punching the man in the side of the face, causing one of his teeth to break.
Hutchinson then picked up a chair and struck the man twice.
The teen and his co-accused left the scene and were picked up and driven away.
Police intercepted the vehicle later that night, not realising the two men had been involved in the incident at the hotel, the court heard.
Later, Hutchinson spoke to police and said he had no memory of the night, admitting he was “heavily intoxicated” at the time.
He said he had no idea what the fight could have been about but that it could have been handled another way.
Magistrate Stephen Guttridge said jail was in range for the violent offences.
Duty lawyer Daniel Hunter said Hutchinson understood that.
“It was certainly cowardly to say the least,” he said.
He said his client was completing an arborist course and had no prior criminal history.
Hutchinson was sentenced to probation and 40 hours of community service.
No convictions were recorded.
