Ten social housing units are set to be built in Hervey Bay in the midst of Queensland’s housing crisis.

The Torquay project will feature 10 one-bedroom units suitable for single people and couples including seniors, young people and people with a disability.

Three of the units will be built to platinum standard and two will be built to gold standard under liveable housing design guidelines, meaning they will be accessible for seniors and people who may have mobility needs.

Construction is being undertaken by Murphy Builders QLD and is forecast to be completed in early 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

These 10 homes are among the 53,500 social homes to be delivered by 2046 as part of the Homes for Queenslanders plan.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the state government was “pulling every lever possible” to deliver more homes for people in need.

“Our Homes for Queenslanders plan is getting more shovels in the ground and tradies on the tools to build the homes Queenslanders need.

“The LNP have been out there suggesting Homes for Queenslanders is too much, so the question is what will they cut – will it be social homes like these in Hervey Bay?”

Murphy Builders construction manager Dominic Carmine said the builder appreciated the opportunity to work with QBuild to deliver the project.

“QBuild and the design team have done a great job in documenting aesthetically pleasing units that carefully incorporate liveable housing design guidelines into consideration,” he said.
