The Tara Festival 2022 in pictures: A winning weekend for punters and patrons

Thousands of visitors were treated to a weekend of quirky festivities as they placed a bet or two on the camel and yabby races at the Tara Festival 2022. Check out all the action and excitement from the massive weekend:

The sun was shining and thousands of people from all over Australia made their way through the gates of the highly-anticipated 2022 Tara Festival to enjoy back-to-back camel race days and the surprise stand out of the day – yabby races.

The yabby racing was held after each camel race and drew in hundreds of people who cheered the crustaceans, with some punters winning big on the unusual event.

Gaylene Smith travelled from Brisbane with husband Ronald and brother-in-law Patrick for their first taste of the festival and said the yabby racing already had them hooked.

Mrs Smith donned two first-place prize ribbons and a third-place ribbon on her shirt, which were won by her husband and brother.

She said the pair had a great time betting on yabbies while she walked around and soaked up the entertainment.

“We’ll definitely be back,” she said.

“It was great watching the amount of effort the organisers really put into it.

Jockey Chontelle Janesse and camel ‘Ringer’ took out first prize in the 400m finale on Saturday, finishing in 35 seconds and beating 2019 champions Kyrraley Woodhouse and ‘Gunna’.

Mayor Paul McVeigh was also spotted trackside and said the event really captured what the Western Downs is all about.

“It really shows that it is the people that make the region,” he said.

The camel races continued well into Sunday as convoys of camper vans began to make their way out of the festival grounds and start the journey back home.
