A man returned an extraordinary blood alcohol reading after attempting to break into a victim’s home, as he was so “disorientated” he believed it was his own.

Shannon John Copetti appeared in Dalby Magistrates Court on November 14 after a string of drunken offences.

Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said authorities were called to a residential address after it was reported a drunk man was trying to gain entry to the home on September 17 last year.

“When police arrived they observed a male person walk around the back yard of the property,” he said.

“(Copetti) said he was at his home and offered the police to come inside for a drink.”

The court was told the man also asked police to keep his gate closed as to not let his dog escape.

“He refused to leave after being asked multiple times, and was placed under arrest,” Sergeant Hutchins said.

The man also reportedly resisted arrest and didn’t comply when asked to sit in the back of the police vehicle.

“After being at the watch-house for three hours he still showed a reading of 0.40,” Sergeant Hutchins said.

“How he was alive at that reading is beyond me, pretty sure that’s close to dead.”

Defence lawyer Brad Skuse said the man had originally been drinking at a hotel before going to another residence and consuming a bottle that was on the table of that house.

“He’s not sure the exact contents of what was in the bottle but he became disorientated and heavily intoxicated,” Mr Skuse said.

“So much so he believed he was at his own home when police arrived.”

The court was told Copetti went back to the police station the following day to apologise to the police and the victim for his actions.

The man pleaded guilty to trespass and obstructing police.

He was fined $400, and a conviction was recorded.
