The Western Downs is on flood alert one week out from Christmas after Jandowae was inundated with a 120mm deluge in a matter of hours.
Western Downs Regional Council issued a flood warning about 1.45am Thursday morning after the Jandowae water supply dam passed the minor flood level of 0.05m, reaching 0.5m.
A resident told the Dalby Herald that the Chinchilla Wondai Rd and the Dalby and Jandowae roads had been impacted with flood water, but that was now starting to subside.
“There was hardly any rain in town (Wednesday), but there was up to 120mm out Lower Jinghi way and Jandowae East had around 50mm,” she said.
“It was drizzling in town most of the day and there was a big black cloud in the northwest. The wind farm workers all came in early yesterday afternoon because they got shut down because it was pouring.
“The creek has been up to the bottom of the bridge and that was about as high as it got, but we’ve just heard that its falling now.
“We also had a heap of water out near the rubbish dump and it was at about 0.3m when I came in this morning.”
WDRC landfills manager Adrian Bennett said they had also received rainfall but it hadn't impacted operations.
“We saw about 40mm here so it wasn’t too bad, there are a couple of roads which were cut off but it’s not going to interfere with transport coming from Dalby,” he said.
“We didn’t receive any wind or damages, there's a bit of mud we have to deal with, but otherwise it's fine.”
Back in October Jandowae and much of the Western Downs were thrashed by heavy storms and rainfall which destroyed crops, flattened homes and flooded roads and residents said the most recent storm paled in comparison.
“This was nothing compared to that storm,” Mr Bennet said.
“When we had that storm it knocked all the trees down, roofs ripped off and hail damaged homes.”
The Jandowae resident agreed.
“It wasn’t windy or anything, it wasn’t like the storms a few months ago, we didn't have any wind or damage,” she said.
“We had some people say they couldn't get to Dalby this morning but apart from that it is all good now.”
