Dalby State High School’s Elin Salase-Edmonds has a talent for making the dreaded math class a fun and transformative experience for her students, helping her earn the title of the region’s best teacher.
Ms Salase-Edmonds said she enjoyed nothing more than showing the children they can love maths as much as she does.
“I’ve always loved maths when I was a kid, and I guess I just fell into it,” she said.
“I love working with the kids and showing them there’s always different ways to do things and approach the question.
“And just seeing the look on their faces when they have success.”
Ms Salase-Edmonds teaches maths to students in Years 8 through 12 and said she approached her classes in an alternative way, drawing upon real life experiences.
“I like to get them thinking outside the box,” she said.
“Initially many of them will start out hating it but I can change that mindframe. I try to simplify it and make it much easier for them to understand.”
Outside her busy school schedule, Ms Salase-Edmonds also coaches a team of superstar women in the Dalby Diehards, taking on the open women’s side role as its first woman coach in Diehards history.
The star sportswoman was also voted Dalby’s best sports coach for 2021 in September.
