Dalby Relay for Life: Anthony’s Fabrics’ Lorna Laverty named as face of cancer fundraising event

After several family members were diagnosed with cancer throughout her life, Lorna Laverty said she was aware the same could happen to her. Then a mammogram check with her doctor changed the Dalby woman’s life forever.

A Dalby cancer survivor who had three family members die from the horrific disease has called on sufferers to not let their diagnosis become their identity.

Anthony’s Fabrics owner Lorna Laverty had her first experience with cancer in 1965 when her mother-in-law was found diagnosed.

Six more people in her family would go onto be treated for the illness throughout the 82-year-old Dalby woman’s life, with three of them sadly dying.

At the age of 65, Mrs Laverty was told she had breast cancer, but instead of letting it consume her she went down a different route.

“When you’re given something like that, you need to adjust your life, and continue with a lot of living,” Mrs Laverty said.

“Don’t let it bog you down, because yes, you have to go through a terrible journey, but you need to look at the other end of it.

“You need to plan your life on what you’re going to do despite it, because that’s what gets you out of bed in the morning each day.”

Mrs Laverty said she didn’t receive any further treatment after the suspect lump was removed from her breasts during surgery 16 years ago, and made a full recovery.

“I was one of the lucky ones since my husband, father, and uncle all died after their journeys,” she said.

“People die from these diseases, and I’ve had the privilege to know many people who have passed away along the line.

“But I’ve lived long enough to see others survive, and have families, and be wonderful people with children.”

Mrs Laverty herself understands the support cancer sufferers need, after she witnessed the severe lack of help available 60 years ago.

Because of her determination and community spirit, she was chosen as the face of this year’s Relay for Life in Dalby, held annually to raise money for cancer research, prevention, and support.

Mrs Laverty will lead other survivors and their carers dressed in their best ‘musicals’ costumes on a lap to officially open the event, which supports the Cancer Council Queensland.

You can join her at the Dalby PCYC on the September 4 from 2pm — 10pm.
