Dalby PCYC Boxing Club’s Andrew and Judd Alderton go international, set to compete in Berlin

The hard work of Dalby PCYC athletes and coaches has paid off with father and son duo Andrew and Judd Alderton being selected to represent Australia in Germany.

The pair will leave for Berlin later this month to take part in the German Open, a five day event which will see Judd fight competitors from across the world while Andrew will be one of three coaches for the team of 10 Australian athletes.

This will be Judd’s second time competing internationally after fighting in the Jean Lewis tournament in Arizona last year and the first time Andrew will coach internationally.

Andrew said it was an honour to be selected to coach the team.

“Australian Boxing looked at what I’d been doing as a coach and how my guys had been performing particularly at events like nationals and selected me from the Australian Boxing Association,” he said.

“It feels crazy, I’m stoked. I’ve never coached internationally before and I feel pretty privileged to be able to do it.

“It will be business as usual, the people who have been selected are at the top of their level, I just need to keep their heads in the right frame of mind and when we are in the fight itself look out for what’s going on and keep them going the right direction.

“It's pretty crazy to be looking after all those fighters.”

Andrew said the side would be made up of Australia's best junior boxers.

“It’s a junior side so 15 to 16-year-olds, they all range across different weights and there are seven boys and three girls,” he said.

“The majority of the side are Queenslanders, we seem to have stacked the team, we also have people from NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.

“I’ve now got to get these guys ready from all over Australia, be in their corners and see if we can get them some medals.”

Andrew said Judd was looking forward to competing again on the international stage.

“He is pumped, he is excited to get some new people to box, you fight so many people in Australia and you need some new competition, well he’s going to get some new people now,” he said.

“It can only progress him, he is going to have new opponents, he is going to pick up new techniques, he will try new things and it will give him more confidence.

“It's pretty awesome that I get to go with my son as well.”

Andrew thanked his team for their support.

“I want to thank the whole team that helped us get there, Yusuf, Chase and the rest of the Dalby team as well as a big thank you to Boxing Australia and Boxing Queensland,” he said.

“I’m excited and hopefully there is more to come.”

The duo will compete from September 20 to 27 in Berlin.
