Dalby PCYC Boxing Club has continued to see success, taking home two gold medals from last weekend’s state titles.

Boxers Judd Alderton and Joshua Hassan competed at the event in Cairns, with Alderton taking home gold for the state titles and Hassan also taking out gold for the state titles, alongside a gold and silver for the North Queensland Games.

Coach Andrew Alderton said Hassan (JJ) was up first fighting for the North Queensland Games after winning States by walkover.

“First up we had JJ who was fighting for the North Queensland Games and he got the win in the junior 57kg category, it was a bit messy ad it came down to a tie but they ultimately awarded it to JJ,” he said.

“JJ then fought again for the North Queensland Games this time at 60kg fighting a bloke a bit older, he didn't get the win but It was a really good fight and it was great for his skills and learning.”

Mr Alderton said Judd was up next fighting for the state title.

“On Saturday we had Judd up fighting for the state title in the Junior 66kg and he won that,” he said.

“Then on the Sunday Judd fought in final for the state titles and won it in a hectic, high energy and heated fight.

“He was rematching the same guy from Sunshine Coast nationals who wasn't keen on fighting and kept running away but this time he couldn't get away as easily because the ring was smaller, he had these long arms and he was trying to smother Judd.

“Judd’s a strong kid for his age and once he starts hitting them they just lose confidence.”

Mr Alderton he was proud of the effort the boys had been putting in to prepare for these big shows.

“These two boys have been training for five to six years building themselves up and getting stronger and stronger and we’ve been working towards this,” he said.

The team are now preparing for the upcoming Nationals in Perth and the Australian Club Championships in Adelaide.
