The Western Downs will host a special service for rugby league legend and beloved Dalby man Carl Webb this weekend following his devastating passing over the Christmas break.

It was announced at the end of 2023 that the former State of Origin player had died on December 21 after his long, courageous battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

While many football lovers across the country mourned his death, the town of Dalby in particular, where the star’s family resides were grieving tremendously with many sharing touching tributes.

Western Downs councillor and long-time family friend of the former Broncos player, Megan James, said he was embedded in the region.

“Carl was a kid from Dalby who became a rugby league great, an Aussie icon, a beast on the footy field and a true warrior in the way he faced his diagnosis and used it to help others,” she said.

This weekend Burstows Funerals will host a memorial service for Webby, with an open invitation to the public to attend.

The funeral will be held at St John’s Anglican Church at 153 Cunningham Street in Dalby on January 6 starting from 11am and will be followed by a service at Myall Remembrance Park on the Bunya Highway.

Burstows have said instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Carl Webb Foundation via carlwebbfoundation.org or through the donation envelopes that will be available on the day.

The service will also be available for residents to view online at www.burstows.com.au/tribute-centre.

A team member from the Dalby Devils junior rugby league team has said former under-17 players from the club would be wearing their Carl Webb jerseys while forming a guard of honour at the end of the service.

The beloved footy player had attended a charity round for the Devils last year, where the under-17s teams raised thousands of dollars for his foundation, with former captain Hayden Taylor citing it was a “no-brainer” to raise money in support of Webby’s foundation.

“Carl’s inspired all of us with the way he’s approached his disease,” Mr Taylor said.

“He’s a good country man and he never forgets about Dalby.”
