After being freed from a grim wreckage on the Warrego Highway, a 35-year-old man was fighting for his life after his commodore crashed into a truck, killing his passenger Brook Holder.

The Dalby Herald now understands the man who suffered critical injuries in the crash is Joe Hill from Miles.

The heartbreaking scene unfolded at Bowenville on Friday morning, June 18, leaving the pregnant woman’s family ‘shattered,’ and five children without their mum.

The 29-year-old’s mother, Ruth Deuble, said since receiving the heart-sinking call that her girl was gone, the family had been in pieces.

“She was just such a beautiful person who has done everything for us,” Mrs Deuble said.

“Brooke was always there for her family and was just our everything.”

Following the crash, the Miles man had been flown to hospital from the roadside in a critical condition, after sustaining serious injuries to his arms and legs.

A Princess Alexandra Hospital spokeswoman said Mr Hill was moved from an intensive care unit on Wednesday, June 23, after being in a critical condition for almost five days.

The spokeswoman said the driver was in a stable condition, although would not confirm any injuries or procedures the man endured.

Dalby police Senior Constable Brad Davidson said initial investigations suggested the Holden Commodore veered onto the wrong side of the 100kph road before crashing head on into a truck.

“The road marking suggest it was on the wrong side of the road and the truck driver has done his best to avoid it,” Constable Davidson said.

“But he has braked significantly prior to the impact.”

Constable Davidson said Hill was required to undergo blood tests once at hospital, to determine if alcohol or drug use contributed to the tragic event.

On Thursday, June 24, a Dalby police spokeswoman said investigations into the crash are ongoing.
