LAST week I donated blood. Today I received a text message to say my blood was already at work.

It had gone on to save lives at Moree District Hospital in New South Wales.

The feeling, knowing that only an hour of my time and a little bit of my blood has made such a difference is phenomenal.

This might have been my first donation - but I am now a lifetime donor.

EARLIER: I HAVE never donated blood before.

It is something I have thought about doing but never got around to.

And then our friends' three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

While they have been quietly battling her cancer they have been loudly promoting the importance of blood donations.

Mum Lisa Dean said they decided to make this their focus after learning more about how important blood donations are, specially to kids like their daughter Elki.

So they started a Red 25 group through the Red Cross Blood Bank called Elki's Donors and today they are holding a blood drive, to mark the year anniversary since Elki's diagnosis.

While the family is asking people to donate blood at the Nambour Blood Donor Centre on the Sunshine Coast today, you can donate blood anywhere, anytime.

I'll be donating in New South Wales.

I've been told my donation will save three lives. That's pretty incredible.

So if you haven't donated before either, join me in rolling up your sleeve and giving the gift of life.
