Business leaders have welcomed plans for a new service station at the quiet town of Biggenden with hope it will help bring more travellers to the area.

Biggenden Chamber of Commerce president Kevin Edwards said new business would only boost the town.

The application submitted by town planners Project Urban on behalf of SJS Fuels, if approved, will bring a new Liberty service station to the town on John Street and Frederick Street, with frontage to Caroline Street, which forms part of the Isis Highway.

Mr Edwards said modern facilities and rest stops would align with conversations recently had with the state government about ways to encourage people to visit the town when travelling between Childers and Ban Ban Springs and beyond.

“I think it is a very necessary item that needs to be addressed, and the Transport and Main Roads didn’t seem to be in a position to address adequate rest areas (in the region),” he said.

“I think the town will benefit because more people will stop over, communication will show there is a good and modern service station in Biggenden.”

“It seems to me that it will assist in promoting the town and expand business because people will stop, therefore they will go to the bakery, they will go to the other smaller shops.”

Mr Edwards also welcomed the employment opportunities the business would bring.

According to the application the business would support 10-12 jobs.

There would be three car and two truck fuel dispensers, toilets, air and water services as well as a shop front with hot and cold food.

Mr Edwards said he hoped there would be a discussion around electrical vehicle charging stations to be required at the new site.

“It’s a long distance from Ban Ban Springs if they haven’t got charging stations, so I hope they envisage that they’ll be installing a charging station for long distance travellers,” he said.

“It’s not a gimmick anymore, the days of it (EV’s) being a gimmick are over.”
