A bus driver has been rushed to hospital after having what is believed to have been acid thrown in his face.
Police were on scene at an address off Drews Rd at Loganholme following the alleged attack, which happened about 9.20am.
It is understood no passengers were on the Logan City bus at the time.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a man was taken to hospital in a stable condition with burns to his face and eyes.
She said the incident was called in as an alleged assault.
Police were urging anyone who may have witnessed the shocking attack to come forward.
The male driver of the bus was treated by paramedics and transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital.
“Preliminary inquiries indicate the substance may have been thrown through the driver-side window of the bus. There were no passengers on board at the time of the incident,” a police statement said.
Trish Burgess, who lives nearby, tried to help the driver, who she says was “shaking” and “in a lot of pain.”
“He didn’t say much,” Ms Burgess said. “He was absolutely in a lot of pain though. He was sort of crouched over holding a hose pipe on his eyes, he was very shocked and shaking.”
Ms Burgess only became aware of the incident after paramedics came to her door requesting water to flush out the man’s eye.
“They sat him down on the stairs and were just flushing his face,” she said.
“It was really red and inflamed so we sat with umbrellas to protect him from the sun.”
Ms Burgess said the attack was appalling.
“It was shocking that somebody would actually do something like that to another person,” she said.
“They’re a miserable excuse for a human being.”
Anyone who may have dashcam vision or CCTV in and around Drews Road and Jalan Street between 9am and 10am are urged to contact police immediately.
Bags of evidence have been taken from the bus, which sat empty on the side of Drews Road.
The bus is undergoing a clean.
Police have not yet identified a motive for the attack, and are yet to speak with the bus driver.
Police are still looking for the attacker.
The Transport Workers’ Union has been in contact with the driver and has called for an urgent meeting of the Bus Safety Forum in order to continue to discuss improving bus driver safety in Queensland.
TWU Queensland branch secretary Peter Biagini said it was another “senseless attack against a bus driver who is performing a vital public service”.
“Once again drivers are in the firing line,” he said.
“Bus drivers have had enough - they work day in and day out to ensure that Queenslanders can get to where they need to go, and this is how they are treated.
“I hope that this coward is caught, charged, and jailed for this abhorrent attack.”
A Translink spokesman said they were aware of the incident where a substance was thrown on a Clarks Logan City bus driver this morning.
“The bus was out of service at the time,” he said.
“Any attack on bus drivers is unacceptable and illegal, and the incident is being investigated by Queensland Police Service.”
