A new pharmacy and health foods store has opened in Bundaberg, bringing a unique alternative to online shopping for locals with specialised dietary requirements.

The WholeLife Pharmacy and Healthfoods store in Bundaberg West opened on May 13, conveniently located on Bourbong St close to the hospital and medical centres.

Along with a wide range of natural medicines, the pharmacy stocks health foods and sustainable living products including organic and biodegradable cleaning and beauty products.

Previously West Bundaberg Pharmacy, the owners became franchisees to the Wholelife chain after recognising a need in the community for a bricks and mortar store giving easy access to health food products.

Brenton Veurman, part-owner of the business along with two other local pharmacists, said the Wholelife pharmacy met the needs of people with specialised nutritional needs including coeliac, vegan and keto diets.

Mr Veurman’s philosophy is that healthcare is better managed proactively through a healthy lifestyle.

“We recognised that there’s a large part of the community which needed some specialised food items,” Mr Veurman said.

“Healthcare in general, it’s a bit more about trying to keep people healthy rather than just coming if they are sick … it’s a lot harder to manage that.

“If we can help make it easier for people to stay healthy through diet and lifestyle, then it helps reduce the health burden.”

A naturopath is available in the pharmacy on Thursdays, and local nutritionists have already begun referring patients to the store after previously needing to order medicines and health food products online.

“There’s a lot of people thanking us for bringing (the pharmacy) to Bundaberg just to make it a lot easier; they don’t have to buy it online anymore,” Mr Veurman said.

“Instead of having to go to several places and several websites, everything’s here that they need.”

The Wholelife chain was founded in Cairns by brothers Frank and Vince Pappalardo in 2011, and now has over 20 pharmacies and health food markets in locations around Australia.

Mr Veurman said that the access to the full range of Wholelife products means that he can adjust his store’s holdings based on customer demand.

“If customers are having trouble sourcing something they saw online and they want to get it locally, it’ll be just a matter of them coming in and talking to us, because it’s more than likely that we will be able to get it in,” Mr Veurman said.

“We will adjust our stock range depending on what people need.”

WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods is located at 3/290 Bourbong Street, Bundaberg West.
