Two boys identified as other occupants of car involved in Goodwood Rd crash

Police have identified two other teens as the driver and second passenger in the car involved in a fatal collision near Childers that claimed the life of beloved local teen, Illiana Palella.

Two 17-year-old boys have been identified as the other occupants of the car involved in Tuesday’s tragic crash on Goodwood Road.

South Bundaberg teen Illiana Palella lost her life due to the critical injuries she sustained in the accident involving a car the three were travelling in, and a security firm’s armoured vehicle.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said a 17-year-old Gooburrum boy was the driver of the car. He was airlifted to Bundaberg Hospital from the scene in a critical condition and transferred to a Brisbane hospital later on Tuesday, May 23.

A 17-year-old Millbank boy was a passenger in the car along with Ms Palella.

The Millbank boy was taken to Bundaberg Hospital by ambulance from the scene in a serious but stable condition. Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service confirmed on Friday that he remained in a stable condition.

Metro North Hospital and Health Service has been contacted for the current condition of the Gooburrum boy.

The police spokesperson also identified the occupants of the Prosegur armoured car as a 49-year-old man, the driver of the vehicle, and a 25-year-old female passenger.

The driver and passenger of the armoured car sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and were transported to Friendly Society Private Hospital.

A Friendly Society Private Hospital spokesman said the pair were treated for minor injuries and discharged the same day.

Police said on Friday that no charges had been laid in relation to the crash, and the crash was under investigation by the Forensic Crash Investigation unit.

Police also confirmed that Ms Palella died on Wednesday from injuries sustained in the crash.

The 17-year-old was flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition on Tuesday however her family confirmed on Thursday she did not survive her injuries.

One of Ms Palella’s friends who created a GoFundMe page for her family described the teenager as a “vibrant” girl and a “beautiful friend”.

“Everyone knew that she could put a smile on anybody’s face,” it says on the page, which has raised more than $3000 as of Thursday morning.

Her workplace, Woolworths Hinkler, arranged counselling for her friends and colleagues, a company spokesman confirmed on Thursday.

According to friends, Ms Palella was returning to Bundaberg from a social engagement near Childers when the crash occurred.

The road was closed for several hours before Queensland Police Service reopened it at 11.20am.

Security firm Prosegur confirmed one of its armoured vehicles was involved in the crash.

“Prosegur is aware of a serious motor vehicle accident that has occurred in the Bundaberg region involving one of our armoured vehicles and one other vehicle,” a Prosegur spokesman said.

“The two Prosegur crew members have sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical attention.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of all people involved in this incident at this time and we will provide further details as the information becomes available.”
