Police warn residents to lock cars after spate of thefts in Bargara

Police have revealed the streets that were targeted in a Bargara crime spree where phones, bank cards and more were stolen from cars.

Thieves broke into seven vehicles in Bargara at the weekend in what Queensland Police Service described as a crime spree.

The vehicle owners reported cash, sunglasses, bank cards, a mobile phone, a set of lawn balls and several tools as among the items stolen.

Streets targeted by the thieves include the Esplanade, Panoramic Way, Trevors Rd, Clarke St, Sandy Stand Buchan Dr.

All break-ins occurred between Friday, February 17 and Sunday, February 19.

At the time of writing no charges had been laid, with all incidents under investigation by Bargara Police.

All the vehicles were left unlocked by their owners.

A Queensland Police spokesman reminded car owners to always lock their vehicle when parked or unattended, even if it was only for a minute.

According to police data there has been a 60 per cent increase in vehicle break-ins in Bundaberg in the past six months.

There were 244 reports of offenders stealing from vehicles or entering vehicles with intent in Bundaberg since August 2022, compared with 152 reports for the six months prior.

Landcare’s Killer St facility was also recently targeted by thieves with more than $6000 worth of goods stolen.

Bundaberg Landcare president Mike Johnson called for governments to tackle increasing youth crime by funding intervention programs for children involved in crime.
