Gayle Bessant faces court after drunken crash on her way to ‘get on’
She was remorseful and told the court that her sister was killed after being hit by a driver and she knew the extent of the devastation the incident could have caused.

A woman has received a hefty fine after she crashed her car on a drunken drive to get drugs.
Gayle Michelle Bessant pleaded guilty in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday to one count of driving under the influence of liquor.
Police were called to a crash at Capalaba at 10.38am on March 25 at a carpark on Redland Bay Rd.
When police arrived QAS were treating Bessant who was suspected of being intoxicated.
Officers spoke with Bessant who told them she had been drinking while driving prior to the crash and refused further treatment from paramedics.
Bessant then participated in a breath test which returned a reading of 0.169.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Dean Burgess told the court Bessant told officers that she was driving to Deception Bay from Victoria Point to “get on”, which meant she was going to buy drugs.
Sergeant Burgess told the court there was “no excuse” for driving intoxicated.
An emotional Bessant, who represented herself in court, said she was “extremely remorseful” and there was “no excuse” for what she did.
She told the court that her sister was killed after being hit by a driver and she knew the extent of the devastation the incident could have caused.
Bessant said she had relocated to Brisbane some time ago and intended to get into rehab by the end of the week.
Magistrate Andrew Moloney took into account Bessant’s plea of guilty and that she had been without her licence for two months already.
Mr Moloney also accepted Bessant had insight into her issues and was getting help.
Bessant was fined $1000 and was disqualified from holding a licence for 10 months.
A conviction was recorded.
