The mother of a boy who helped save another child from drowning at Norville Park Pool in Bundaberg has described the “surreal” situation they were confronted by on Sunday.
The primary-school aged boy rushed to the Bundaberg Hospital in a critical condition after being pulled unresponsive from the pool shortly before 4pm.
Angela Rombo said her son Jaxson, 9, was using his goggles and flippers when he saw the other child at the bottom of the pool.
Jaxson told a man what he had seen and he was able to dive down and rescue the child, Angela said.
Angela said she was very grateful her son had been there to provide assistance to the boy.
“It was all pretty surreal for him,” she said.
Angela said her family had been hoping and praying the boy would be okay after witnessing lifeguards working on the child.
She said she had kept Jaxson home from school after his ordeal.
Angela said she was proud of her son for his quick thinking, but not surprised.
“It’s kind of what we do – look out for others,” she said.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the child was unresponsive when taken from the water and taken to hospital.
A spokesman later said the boy was awaiting a medical transfer to a hospital in Brisbane.
A statement was released on behalf of the public pool on Monday.
“Norville Pool Reopened Norville Pool has reopened following an incident on Sunday afternoon,” it read.
“Yesterday, an emergency incident occurred that required an immediate response from our lifeguards and local emergency services. “Thanks to the prompt actions of our team and the support of medical professionals and emergency responders, the necessary care was provided.
“We are fully cooperating with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the Queensland Police Service in their ongoing investigation, and we are providing support to our staff.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
