Shirtless men, rowdy crowds and a huge knockout.

It sounds like your standard boxing match but it was actually the scene of a football game in Victoria that had to be abandoned when violence spilled on to the field last Friday.

Video shows large groups of fans in heated arguments before one was knocked unconcious in a melee that ended on the field and forced police to be called.

Officials called the NPL Victoria game between Oakleigh Cannons and Dandenong Thunder off early in the second half while Football Victoria has launched an investigation into the incident.

“Football Victoria is aware of a serious incident that took place at the Round 5 fixture between Oakleigh Cannons FC and Dandenong Thunder FC,” a league statement read.

“FV condemns all forms of anti-social behaviour and violence, in line with FV’s Rules of Competition and Spectator Code of Behaviour.

“FV has contacted both clubs, who join FV in condemning the behaviour and will fully co-operate with the investigation.

“FV is engaging with all relevant stakeholders to collect detail on the incident … FV will share further detail on sanctions in due course.”

Street fight

Not to be outdone by their southern counterparts, the Top End of Australia was the scene of its own heated altercation.

Players from the Tracy Village Football Club broke out into a brawl on Mitchell St on March 2, following alleged tensions.

Footage of the incident has since been shared online shows at least six men throwing punches and shoving each other across the road from the Tap Bar.

The Tracy Village Football Club confirmed on their social media channels they were aware of the incident on March 2, and said they were conducting a thorough investigation.

NT Police have been contacted for comment. No arrests or charges have been laid.

AFL Northern Territory Hall of Famer stripped of accolade

It’s fair to say one of the Northern Territory’s most acclaimed footy players needs to smoke the peace pipe with the state’s governing body.

Dennis Dunn has long been regarded as one of the legends of the NTFL for his goal kicking exploits in the great St Mary’s sides of the 1980s and 90s.

But seven years after being convicted and charged with attempting to smuggle a pound of cannabis to the Tiwi Islands, Dunn has had his name taken off the goak kicking medal awarded at the 2024 Nichols medal.

The Top End great kicked 817 goals for his beloved St Mary’s in a career that spanned 204 games and nine premierships.

He won the leading goal kicker himself from 1984-88, represented the NT on 12 occasions and was named in the AFLNT Hall of Fame.

“It meant so much to me, because I have 120 of my clan members and they are all over the moon when they talk about me,” Dunn said.“They’re all so proud of me, it was nice to get recognised in that way, but I didn’t realise the impact it had on my people and how proud they would be.”

Super recruit for Southern league

The Dingley Division 1 Southern league outfit could see a few goals being kicked outside the 50m arc in 2024.

The team has signed former Philadelphia Eagle punter Arryn Siposs.

Siposs, 31, played 28 AFL games for St Kilda before crossing codes to become an NFL punter.

He signed at the Eagles in 2021 and played in their Super Bowl LVII defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023.

Siposs was waived by the Eagles in 2023.

AFL’s arrival hasn’t brought footy boom to Tassie

The AFL may be bringing in a top flight team to Tasmania but it looks to be doing little to bolster its standing in the country’s south.

Instead of helping bolster an already strong footy following, the sport has taken a huge hit with one club set to miss the 2024 season.

West Ulverstone Football Club took to social media on Monday night to announce they had made the call which comes after a crisis meeting on January 30.

“Due to player numbers the club has decided to go into recess for the 2024 football season,” the statement from the North West Football League club said.

“It’s certainly not easy to write this or to actually make this decision as a club.”

“I’d like to take the time to say thank you to our life members our loyal players, families, supporters & committee for all the hard work you have put in and committed to this great club.

“It’s been a tough few years both on (and) off field for us all.

“What I must say is how proud I am to be a part of this great club & all the people involved here that sadly a lot of people don’t take the chance to see for themselves.”

Costly countback for cricket side

Someone at Cricket Tasmania needs to practice their maths.

The Greater Northern Raiders have hit out at Cricket Tasmania Premier League officials after being booted from the finals.

The Raiders were removed from this weekend’s finals series after the competition found an “administrative error” in the ladder at the end of the home-and-away season.

The league had given the Raiders, who believed they earned a place in the top-four, an extra bonus point worth 0.6 after officials awarded the Launceston club an extra three wickets in a two-day game in January.

After the mistake was discovered, the finals fixture will now see North Hobart take on Kingborough and Clarence host University as the four clubs aim for a place in next week’s grand final.

“We have gone through many emotions over the (last) couple of days, anger, frustration, disappointment and sadness,” the club said in a statement.

“We were made aware on Tuesday night that there was an Administration error from the Cricket Tasmania Premier League that awarded the wrong number of points to a game in January. Due to the update of ladder, we have missed out of finals.”

Greyhound stuff up amid racism saga

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has received a formal apology from red-faced NSW greyhound bosses over a crass comment referencing the Ezra Mam-Spencer Leniu racism scandal.

This masthead can reveal a GRNSW staffer has been sacked over a tongue-in-cheek form-guide comment in a bizarre and tasteless twist to the NRL’s racism saga involving Broncos pivot Mam and Roosters prop Leniu.

Just hours after the NRL judiciary suspended Leniu for eight games for calling Mam a “monkey”, rugby league’s racism saga spilt into the greyhound industry.

In the lead-up to a low-key greyhound race at Maitland on Monday night, punters became enraged when noticing a comment for race favourite Ezra Man - the greyhound namesake of Broncos star Mam - began with the statement: “Go Bananas! Let’s see IF we can get some positive Headlines, tonight?”.

The comment, published nationwide, was made by an employee of GRNSW. GRNSW apologised unreservedly for the offensive comment, which also appeared on their official website, prompting embarrassed greyhound chiefs to contact Abdo late on Monday night.

“On Monday night in the form comments for the Maitland meeting produced by GRNSW and published on the thedogs website and on the platforms of our partners who use our comments, such as Sportsbet, an inappropriate and offensive comment was made in reference to the name of one of the runners,” the statement said.

“GRNSW was made aware of the comment during the evening and immediately deleted the remark, and while this removed it from thedogs.com.au, this correction did not flow through to our partners.

“GRNSW is appalled by what was published, and apologises unreservedly for the comment, and the distress it has caused.”

Star’s mum says she was ‘too pretty’ to get hurt

Teenager Indie Bostock’s mum wasn’t overly keen for her daughter to play rugby league at a young age and worried about injury to her athletic daughter.

Now the 17-year-old from the Illawarra Steelers and Shellharbour Stingrays said her mum sees she can handle herself while she has worked out the best way possible to avoid a second broken nose - outrunning the opposition.

“At the start, she was a bit scared. She used to say my face was too pretty,’’ said Bostock who has suffered a fractured cheekbone, torn rib cartilage and broken her nose playing the game she loves.

“But she sees I can hold myself now and she’s okay with it.’’

Historic try for new Queensland rugby league team

Six minutes was all it took for Ali Brigginshaw to endear herself to the Western Clydesdales’ faithful.

With the CQ Capras still reeling after a damaging Steph Hancock run that should’ve been the Clydesdales’ first try, Brigginshaw capitalised.

Stepping through the broken Capras’ defensive line, Brigginshaw dived over the line to score the Clydesdales’ first BMD Premiership try.

“It is really special. I felt a really good connection from the minute I came here,” Brigginshaw said.

“The whole community was so lovely and welcoming.

“I really feel like I am a part of the Western Clydesdales’ community, so it (scoring the club’s first BMD Premiership try) is a really proud moment for me.

“It was an awesome performance from the girls, and I hope we did Toowoomba proud.”

Bray’s batting prowess a level above

Caoimhe Bray has announced herself as one Australia’s biggest cricketing prospects after demolitioning a team off her own bat at the age of 14.

The Greater Hunter player smashed 202 runs from 134 balls against Manly Warringah who could only manage 96 in reply as Greater Hunter marched to its maiden title in just their second season in the Sydney based competition.

It was Bray’s third straight century and saw the junior NSW rep finish the season with 955 runs at 68.2, more than 400 clear of the next best.

For coach Chris Wharton, the availability of the multi-talented Bray shouldn’t be taken for granted.

“It was an amazing performance, especially given she spent all of last week at a junior Matildas football training camp,” said Warton.

“She was steady early and reached her first 50 off 60-odd balls, her second and third fifties came off 25 and 33. Then she launched the last off 16, and I was worried my car might finish in the firing line.”

One day is all it takes to seal a record

Young football superstar Waiaria Ellis is continuing her family’s history as elite athletes but she has already got a record of her own in her sights.

If the daughter of former professional rugby league player Ben Ellis and sister to Parramatta NRLW player Jean Kennard takes the field in the Waratahs opener of the season against the ACT Brumbies on Saturday, she will become the youngest Waratahs player ever to debut for the NSW club.By a day.

Named on the bench for the match, if Ellis gets game time she will eclipse the record of Waratahs teammate and old rugby sevens mate Caitlyn Halse who last year ran on at the age of 16 years, six months and six days.

“I just love it. I love playing football. It makes me proud to walk out on a field wearing a jersey and I always feel like my hard work gets me some rewards,’’ Ellis said.“I’m just grateful to be there. I smile a lot because I’m so proud of my teammate and my girls.’’

Major support needs some support of his own

The president of the Adelaide Crows Supporters Group has been hospitalised and faces a significant health battle after suffering a major stroke late last week.

60-year-old Crows superfan Peter Kauschke, who has also been battling bladder cancer, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after suffering the stroke last Friday where doctors found a total of six blood clots on his brain and a patent foramen ovale (a hole) in his heart, which caused the stroke.

He has been supported by wife Tina, daughters Cheryl and Nicole, and son David and faces months of surgery and rehabilitation.
