Bundaberg has been locked in as the venue for a round 21 clash between the North Queensland Cowboys and the Bulldogs.
Bundaberg MP Tom Smith said the event would be held on Sunday, August 7, 2022.
“This will be Bundaberg’s first ever NRL premiership match and I know just how much that means to our community,” he said.
“North Queensland’s Cowboys always ensure it is a blockbuster when they meet the Bulldogs.
“Bundaberg’s iconic Salter Oval is where the two teams will do battle for competition points and we’re expecting a crowd of over 8000 spectators.
“That means extra visitors in Bundaberg in the lead-up to the game and over the weekend who we know will also want to sample our region’s tourism experiences before the big match on the Sunday afternoon.”
Mr Smith said it was a great chance for the region to receive a healthy shot in the arm in the wake of the Covid pandemic.
The Bundaberg MP said the match was part of a deal the State Government worked out with NRL during this year’s finals series and grand final in Queensland.
“Bundaberg has scored a jersey in 2022 in a big win for the region’s economy and the Palaszczuk Government’s Economic Recovery Plan,” he said.
NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said the schedule celebrated the return of clubs to their heartlands.
“Fans will be back at games right across the country and this schedule takes the Telstra Premiership to 20 cities and towns to maximise the opportunity for rugby league fans to watch their heroes live in person,” Mr Abdo said.
“In 2022 we have a great deal to look forward to but as always we will be ready to adapt and adjust our plans should the need arise.”
