A PROPOSED Burnett Heads housing development has been approved by Bundaberg Regional Council despite concerns from residents that it may impact nesting turtles.

However, planning and development spokesman Ross Sommerfeld has assured residents that changes had been made to the plan to address concerns about lighting impacts and effects on the esplanade.

In January, the council received an application to reconfigure and subdivide a lot on Shelley St into 12 lots over two stages.

During the public notification period, 105 submissions were made with concerns raised relating to lighting impacts from the development on the adjoining marine environment and nesting turtles and the site's proximity to the Mon Repos turtle rookery.

"The close proximity to Mon Repos was probably the main issue," Division 6 councillor Scott Rowleson, who voted against the development, said.

Yesterday, councillors voted 7-4 to approve the development .

Cr Sommerfeld said the applicant had acted on the council's recommendation and amended the layout of the development so that lots 6 and 7 took their access from a newly constructed internal road.

"While lots 5, 6 and 7 would still have frontage to the unconstructed sea esplanade and the benefit of natural ocean vistas, they would not have direct vehicle access."

"To address street lighting impacts to sea turtles, conditions have been included to restrict the type of lighting that can be used. These conditions require that street lighting must be of low pressure sodium vapour and be fitted with hoods or be fully screened and directed away from the foreshore and the area north of the Mon Repos turtle rookery."

Cr Sommerfeld said the council was confident the development would complement Burnett Heads and not impact turtles.
