Western Australian mining company Fox Resources has applied for an exploration licence on a site near Bundaberg, despite a previous application being rejected by the state government, which locals fear could lead to the development of a new coal mine.

The site is located on farmland north of the city, between the Burnett and Kolan Rivers, 10km from Bundaberg.

A press release from Lockthegate on Monday said community members and local stakeholders had continued to speak out about the possibility of a new coal mine being developed in the region, with more than 100 people marching against the proposal on Saturday.

Protesters demanded Fox Resources abandon its plans and called for politicians to reject the company’s application, the release stated.

Coal Free Bundaberg spokesperson Cristel Simmonds said the fight had gone on too long and locals deserved a conclusive decision from the government.

“We are determined to stop Fox Resources’ polluting coal mine because it threatens our region’s ability to produce food, it threatens locals’ livelihoods, and it threatens the natural environment that we love,” she said.

“But we are also fed up with having to fight this unwanted coal project.

“Four years is too long.

“Our elected leaders should have stopped this threat by now, so we are calling on politicians of all stripes to stop the delay and cancel this polluting coal mine proposal.

“People deserve a decision; Fox Resources must not be allowed to destroy our food bowl and threaten our reef just so it can mine coal.”
