Teddy the cavoodle dubbed a hero after spooking crims

A small but mighty dog has garnered social media attention after he bravely spooked off a group of crims attempting to break into his home in Yeronga, with his owner publicly naming him her hero.

With more than 1100 likes and comments across two Facebook Groups, Amanda Bird’s cavoodle Teddy has become an overnight sensation, with many labelling him as ‘brave’ and a ‘legend’.

Ms Bird said she was woken by her dog barking and “losing his mind” in her bedroom where she then proceeded to check her security camera footage on her phone.

“I knew something was going on because he doesn’t bark like that, he doesn’t bark at nothing, so I thought oh my god is someone in the house,” she said.

In the footage one of the perpetrators can be seen entering the front yard, with three others waiting on the street by the getaway car, before he was spooked, quickly turning around after hearing Teddy barking madly at the front door.

“I do think that the combination of the dog losing his mind, who’d gone downstairs at this time barking, but still not outside, and me using the Google Home to turn the inside lights on deterred them,” she said.

“I didn’t realise how invaluable a piece of equipment like that can be from a security perspective, just to turn every house light on quickly. “But the reality of it is none of the things that I did would have made any difference whatsoever if the dog hadn’t woken me up.”

Ms Bird said the security cameras and flood lights failed to deter the group of criminals as they concealed their identities.

When police arrived at the home, Ms Bird said Teddy was still very protective and wouldn’t let the them through the gate.

According to the local Facebook group there has been a spike in break and enters in the Yeronga area, with some posting similar attempted or successful activity by a group from the same night.

Queensland Police data shows there has been a spike in unlawful entry offences, doubling between December and April of this year.

A QPS spokesperson said they are continuing to investigate a nearby incident from Thursday night in which a group of four successfully stole a car and other items from a home.

It is not known whether this was the same group.

“From what I got told from police is there were other break ins in the area where they were successful, but I guess because of the dog and the Google Home … our street was left unscathed.”

“I can honestly say after this experience I feel so much safer as a female living on my own with my little Teddy looking out for me,” she said.

Locals and interstate residents alike took to the comment section of the Facebook posts to praise the dog.

“How scary! So glad you acted quickly and have Teddy to protect you,” one user said.

“Good job Teddy! Best security system out there!”

“Teddy deserves all the treatos today! What a legend,” another posted.
