Confronting moment youth's attempt to break-in

Chilling CCTV footage has captured the moment eight youths – one who appears no older than 12 – allegedly creep into a woman’s home in a confronting home break-in.

Police are investigating after the group arrived in a dark-coloured station wagon before allegedly breaking into the garage of a Coorparoo home around 2.40am Sunday.

The next morning, the female homeowner discovered one of the offenders had urinated on her letterbox.

The alleged break-in left the homeowner and her neighbours in shock and fearing for their own safety, especially considering the ease at which the youths broke into a home with such extensive security measures.

The footage shows the youths scaling a fence, before the smallest member climbs through louvres to get into the garage. He rummages through the car before they all leave.

“The footage is quite confronting and I haven’t slept well now for about two nights, from any little noise I hear,” the homeowner said.

“And I get up at three o’clock in the morning checking cameras, I get quite jumpy.

“They’ve taken away a little bit of my love for this house for 16 years we’ve lived here and we’ve never been broken into.”

The homeowner said she had already spent more than $30,000 to secure her house, putting motorised shutters on all the doors and windows, and installing security cameras.

“We’ve got a monitoring system with the security company,” she said.

“We’ve got sensor lights, we’ve got fences, we’ve got gates, and they still managed to get in.”

She said a lot of neighbours who had been broken into the past 12 months and they were all on edge.

“This neighbourhood now is just being smashed by crime,” she said.

“Our neighbours are all paranoid. We’ve lost the trust in our community now – every time a car drives past and stops, or somebody slowly walks past we suspect everybody now so everyone’s a suspect.

“It’s really sad actually, that whole community trust is gone. And no one really everyone keeps to themselves.”

Nearby resident Priya Riva was broken into about a year ago, with the offenders stealing her valuables. Since then, she felt like she didn’t have any control over her own security.

“It was very terrifying, because we didn't hear anything, it was so quiet and they could have just broken into our bedroom and harmed us,” she said.

“It was very scary.”

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with one count each of stealing, unlawful use of motor vehicle, wilful damage, possess utensils or pipes, possess dangerous drugs, and receiving tainted property, and five counts of attempted enter premises and commit.

He is expected to front Brisbane Childrens Court on Thursday.

A QPS spokeswoman said they take all reports of anti social behaviour seriously including public urination.

“Locations such as mailboxes and fences outside private properties often attract a small minority of people who behave antisocially; however, local police have not experienced a trend in this type of behaviour,” she said.

Police are urging anyone with information that may assist investigations, to contact them.
