LIKE most of Queensland, I never met Senior Constable Brett Forte.
Before his tragic death last week, I didn't know he was one of the thousands of men and women who work each and every day to keep us safe.
I didn't know he was a husband, father, brother, son or friend to many.
But I knew his blue uniform and what that represents to all of us.
Snr Const Forte's murder in the line of duty stopping an armed thug intent on doing harm has had a profound impact on thousands around the country.
It has made us pause for a moment and consider the role of our police and what they sacrifice to fulfil a vow to serve and protect with honour.
Yesterday, as Snr Const Forte was farewelled with full police honours and a solemn Guard of Honour, the pride among his colleagues was obvious to all.
Raw with emotion, it was a mark of respect and solemn recognition of his sacrifice.
Snr Const Forte was a hero who belonged to more than one family.
In the wake of his death, and as his wife Susan Forte asked yesterday, thanks and respect must be given to every member of our police service.
I never met Brett, but his legacy of courage and honour will be remembered.
