Did you know, last week was Men’s Health Week?
The focus of the week was to make a positive difference to individual men’s lives.
It was about creating national awareness about men’s health in general. Why?
Because, if you look at the Men’s Health Week website there are a range of interesting facts about the health of men and boys.
It identifies the three top reasons for reduced lifespan in men are cardiovascular disease, suicide, and motor vehicle accidents.
And a recent report from the ABC identified that suicide the leading cause of death for Australians between 15 and 44. Now that is alarming, regardless of sex or gender.
To further hammer home the impact of health, the Australian Government identified in 2019, the costs of mental health alone, was an extraordinary $56.7 million a year.
It makes it clear, that the many events that were run across the country, last week, to connect and understand men’s health, both physical and mental, was essential.
We should never underestimate, the power of talking, being open and being vulnerable with each other about the challenges we face, big or small.
I know I need to do more of this.
As a wise man once told me, “If you are physically sick with say a flu, you go to the doctor, so if you are mentally drained and feeling anxious and overwhelmed, why wouldn’t you go see a therapist?”
My view is they were right. Now, I still go to the doctor if I am sick, but now also now actively look after my own mental health and wellbeing by visiting my friendly psychologist.
The reason I tell this story, is because, it is my view, we must talk about and break down the stigma of managing all aspects of our health.
You never know, it just may save your life or someone you know.
Men’s health is not a solo game.
If it were not for the support of our wives, husbands, family, and friends where would we be?
We must acknowledge the important role they play and contribution to not just our health, but all aspects of our lives.
The Toowoomba Chamber is blessed, with many members who actively seek to change people’s health, including hospitals, gyms, psychologists, counselling, and other support services.
