THE new Toowoomba Regional Council has been sworn in and it is now time to get down to business.

Councillors followed tradition yesterday and voted in Carol Taylor as deputy after she received the biggest number of votes.

Many were tipping Cr Geoff McDonald to take the deputy's job as it is no secret that he is being looked at as a future mayor.

It is likely that Cr Antonio and Cr Taylor will make this term their last.

That gives Cr McDonald four more years to hone his mayoral potential - if he is still keen.

These next four years may be the most important for the past few decades.

Toowoomba is in the middle of an infrastructure building boom.

That will not last forever and this council must look well into the future to secure the level of economic prosperity we currently enjoy.

We need to ensure we are not caught stranded by further downturns in the energy industry,

A united council working together is what people want. Let's hope it can be delivered.
