OMG! Decadent Donuts took out four awards at the Baking Association of Australia Excellence in Baking Awards, including a clean sweep in the Best Gourmet Donut category with Gold, Silver and Bronze.
What started out as a farmers market stall in Brisbane in 2018 has now expanded to 70 regions across Australia, including Townsville.
Owners of the local Townsville business, Tania Davies and Nicole Knight, have been making and selling doughnuts for two years and said they were thrilled to receive the major awards.
The doughnut stall is a regular fixture at Cowboys home games, the Strand Night Markets, Willows Shopping Centre, North Shore and various specialty events.
They said they have regulars that come to get their sugary fix wherever they set up.
“Our customers are always telling us that our doughnuts are the best, and that’s what we think too, but now we can tell our customers they are 100 per cent confirmed as being correct,” they said.
Ms Davies said she first heard of the doughnut business when she tried a doughnut from the stall in Cairns and was inspired to get in on the action.
“I fell in love with them and was told no one was running one in Townsville,” Ms Davies said.
“We came home, and I spoke to the family, and we all thought, why not?”
With the doughnuts judged on a blind taste test, the owners said it proved that the gluten-free, vegan doughnuts stacked up against the regular doughnuts.
“Some of the most popular doughnuts include Cinnamon, Strawberry Patch and Coffee Coffee Yum,” Ms Davies said.
The aptly named Spicy Ranga, which is a combination of ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom and cloves, has proved to be a popular choice for those liking stronger flavours.
