Decorated Townsville police officer Brenton Webb dies after tragic accident

A highly-regarded Queensland police officer has died after sustaining a head injury in a tragic accident while off duty this week as tributes pour in.

A respected Townsville police officer has died after a tragic incident while off duty.

Acting Inspector Brenton Webb died after suffering a head injury in a fall this week.

Acting Commissioner Shane Chelepy sent an email to all staff last night with the news of the officer’s passing.

“It is with great sadness that I confirm the passing of Acting Inspector Brenton Webb from the Townsville District, who died after sustaining a head injury whilst off duty this week in Mt Isa,” he said.

“On behalf of the entire Queensland Police Service, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Brenton’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

“We are providing Brenton’s family with the support they need during this time.

“With honour he served.

“Brenton was a much loved and respected member of the Queensland Police Service and Townsville community.”

Inspector Webb has worked in North Queensland for many years, spending majority of his policing years working in Townsville and recently relieving in Mount Isa.

Inspector Webb was highly-regarded by fellow officers in Townsville and around the state.

An officer said Inspector Webb was extremely well-liked, and that “no one could say a bad word about him”.

Police Minister Dan Purdie said Inspector Webb will be deeply missed.

“On behalf of the Crisafulli Government, I want to pay tribute to Inspector Webb - a respected officer, a community leader, and a much-loved colleague,” he said.

“With decades of service under his belt, he dedicated his life to keeping Queenslanders safe, especially in North Qld.

“His sudden passing has left a deep hole in the hearts of those who knew him.

“I’ll remember him as a top bloke, a great mate to many, a mentor to hundreds of junior police, a loving husband and proud Dad.”

News of his passing has shocked the North Queensland community, prompting an outpouring of grief and heartfelt memories.

Known for his unwavering dedication to his community, Inspector Webb is being remembered as a mentor, a leader, and a “top bloke.”

Under a Townsville Bulletin post, Debbie MacLean wrote she couldn’t believe her “dear friend” was gone.

“A true legend - an incredible friend and one of the finest in the job. You gave so much to the Townsville Police Service and to all of us who were lucky enough to know you,” she said.

“You mentored many, always generous with your knowledge and never without that trademark smile. You made a difference every single day and your loss leaves a huge hole in our hearts and our community.”

Shane Alexander, who knew Inspector Webb from a young age, described him as a guiding figure in his life.

“He knew me as a troubled kid right through my adolescence and into adulthood,” he said.

“Always happy to help and had encouraging words.”

Acting Townsville Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney expressed her condolences to Webb’s family, while former MPs Les Walker and Aaron Harper praised his dedicated service and great sense of humour.
