Warwick ‘The Wiz’ Capper on who he’s supporting in AFL grand final

The tight shorts, bleached blond mullet and momentous marks made Warwick Capper a one-man PR machine and AFL icon. Having played for both the Swans and the Lions, The Wiz has his say ahead of the season decider.

Most fans think the season culminates on Saturday with the AFL grand final, but to a legion of his fans the showdown between Sydney and Brisbane should really be renamed the Warwick Capper Cup.

The Aussie rules football icon and flamboyant cult hero helped put the game on the map in the NSW and Queensland capitals in the 1980s.

But Capper is in a race against time to make the biggest “Warwick Capper Cup” of them all after tearing a bicep earlier this week.

“I was doing weights trying to pump up for the grand final and you wouldn’t believe it … it f---ing tore,” Capper said.

Known for his spectacular marks, blond locks and tight shorts, at the height of his fame in Sydney he even released a single and appeared on Neighbours.

Capper also set a template the Swans have followed by recruiting and marketing big-name forwards, with Tony Lockett, Barry Hall and Lance Franklin following in his footsteps.

And the man known as ‘Wiz’ has remained busy off the field, having bought and sold a brothel in Melbourne in the past year.

Capper’s transition into the sex work industry was just another chapter in the colourful Capper story, which has also included an appearance in an adult film and posing for Penthouse magazine.

“The only reason I bought that (brothel) was because it was in a good area, it was good fun, and then a Chinese family bought it,” Capper said.

“It was a bit of a heads--- though.”

Capper said he was close to “hitting the activate button” to start his very own OnlyFans account.

“I was about to push the button but my wife said it’s a bit tacky, and we had some big corporates coming up, so I’ll focus on a documentary instead,” Capper said.

Capper admits he has struggled to pick up a full-time commentary gig, finding analysis more fitting for his livewire personality.

“F--- me, it’s not easy,” Capper said of his various radio and TV gigs.

“I get a bit excited, so I just do special comments now.

“It’s hard to remember the names, and then you say the wrong team, and you can’t swear.”

Capper is heading to the MCG to watch Saturday’s game as a fan, and while he’s remembered fondly by both sets of fans, the former Swan had to pull out a few tricks to get one of the hotly contested tickets.

Capper even went as far as telling the Swans, “If you can’t give me a ticket, I’m going for the f---ing Lions.”

But now guaranteed a spot for the big match, Capper thinks the Swans are perfectly placed to win their first premiership since 2012.

After playing for the Swans for nine years, ‘Wiz’ believes they have taken the right steps towards doing something he was never able to.

“They finished on top like we did, but we lost two (finals in 1987) and got our arse kicked,” Capper said.

“The Swans have done the right thing, won two games in a row, and I don’t think the Lions can win.”

Proud of his work at both clubs, the forward is glad he was able to play his part in making the Swans the hottest ticket in town.

“My job was marketing and kicking goals. I did that,” Capper said.
