Model sent ‘death threats’ before death at Sydney brewery

A young model found dead in the bathroom of a popular Sydney brewery had been receiving death threats in the weeks prior, her father has revealed.

Savana Calvo died in the bathroom of the Young Henrys brewery on Wilson St in Newtown about 11.30pm last Wednesday, after an evening of drinking at the venue not far from her home.

The 27-year-old’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

Ms Calvo’s father Daniel Paul Calvo told The Daily Telegraph his daughter had been receiving threats and harassment from individuals, with NSW Police now investigating the circumstances leading up to her suicide.

“As her father, I knew very well that she was being harassed and stalked and I tried to intervene,” Mr Calvo said.

“Although we were very close, daughters only tell their parents so much. There’s more and more coming out... leading up to last week she was getting multiple death threats.

“It’s just an incredible disaster, a nightmare, we’re slowly working our way through it.”

In a statement, a NSW Police spokesperson said: “As the matter is before the Coroner, police won’t be making any further comment. The alleged threats you mention will form part of that investigation.”

Tributes have flowed online for Ms Calvo in the wake of her death, with a GoFundMe set up to support her family already raising $28,000.

Mr Calvo said his daughter had been involved in a serious car accident at Zetland in 2022 that had seen her suffer a serious spinal injury and impacted her modelling work.

“We didn’t think she was suicidal, because she used to say she wouldn’t do it for me, but clearly she’s been pushed to the brink,” Mr Calvo said.

“It’s crushing, it’s devastating, and we’re very, very grateful for the messages of support we’ve had.

“Her mother and I were with the police at Darlinghurst on Thursday morning trying to determine what happened and I know there will be a comprehensive investigation.”

Family friend Adam St John-Foti, who set up the GoFundMe to support Mr Calvo and his ex-wife Tatjana, said it “those who knew her best” were aware she had gone through “some trying times” recently that “led to her tragic passing”.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Savana, 27,” Mr St John-Foti wrote online.

“She was a cherished daughter, sister and friend who brought so much love and light into all of our lives.

“She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mr St John-Foti said the Savana’s family was “spellbound” by the support shown for their family.

“We also appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and messages of support during this difficult time,” he wrote.

“Your kindness means the world to Savana’s family as we navigate through our grief.”

Young Henrys was closed to the public on Thursday and police could be seen outside.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Young Henrys.
