A massive $830 million health and education precinct in Sydney’s southwest is set to open in a matter of weeks after construction to complete the specialist Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and new birthing suites were completed.

Hundreds of clinicians at Liverpool Hospital are set to move into their new, state-of-the-art digs this month as part of the redevelopment of the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct, before a new Emergency Department opens next year.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said funds were being directed to southwest Sydney hospital expansions amid “rapidly growing populations”.

This facility will play an important role in supporting communities,” he said. “In particular, the new birthing suites, neonatal unit and space for parents to stay overnight with their kids will help make, what can be a challenging time, that little bit easier.”

Health Minister Ryan Park told The Daily Telegraph more than 1.2 million people are expected to call south western Sydney home by 2030.

“We are committed to investing in our essential health services to support our growing and diverse community in Liverpool and south-western Sydney,” he said.

The second phase of the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the southwest Sydney hospital is set to start early next year, and will include new inpatient units, an integrated cancer centre – featuring the Australian Cancer Research Foundation’s Oasis Wellness Centre – and expanded women’s and children’s ambulatory care.

“This investment in our hospitals is transforming the experience of our patients, staff and community through the network of care across the region,” Mr Park said.

Dr Svetha Rao, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Liverpool Hospital said she was “so excited to see the new hospital building preparing to open for care, particularly the birthing unit”.

“It looks amazing and will provide women and their families from across the district with such beautiful and contemporary facilities providing support and comfort at this special time in their lives,” Dr Rao said.

“I gave birth to my daughter 10 months ago at Liverpool Hospital and I am so pleased women will soon have the opportunity to have their babies in such lovely birthing rooms.’’
