Police have arrested a man in Jingili days after a Wadeye man was left to bleed out outside a Darwin supermarket as a crowd struggled to save him.

Major Crime Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey confirmed a 28-year-old man was arrested in a Jingili home at midday Tuesday in relation to an alleged stabbing in Darwin’s CBD.

The arrest comes nearly 60 hours after a 36-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in front of a group of people on Cavenagh St just after midnight on Saturday, September 16.

Sergeant Morrissey said fewer “than a dozen” people — including the victim and his alleged attacker — were in a group when a disturbance broke out.

“There was a group of people, there was a disturbance within the group, the (alleged) offender and the rest of the group were involved,” he said.

“But I don't believe the (alleged) offender has got any other parties with him.

“That’s gone down the street a little bit, and ended up in an incident where the victim got stabbed in the stomach.”

Sergeant Morrissey said people on the street tried to perform first aid on the 36-year-old before paramedics attended.

He said the older man died in hospital due to the severe abdominal injuries.

Sergeant Morrissey said the 28-year-old was being held in Palmerston watch house, with charges expected to be confirmed at a later point.

He said it was currently unknown if the victim and his alleged attacker knew each other, but said the two men “were certainly talking to each other earlier”.

He was unable to confirm if alcohol was a factor, disclose the type of weapon used, or reveal how the alleged attacker’s identity was confirmed in the lead up to his arrest.

Sergeant Morrissey denied police were “reluctant to speak”, but acknowledged investigators were cautious about releasing information that may be “prejudicial to the investigation” or lead to evidence destruction or suspects fleeing Darwin.

He confirmed there was no connection between three significant Friday alleged incidents, including the Woolworths stabbing, a domestic violence bottle attack and a different mystery pool of blood spotted outside Parliament House.

“I can certainly confirm that the reported pool of blood has got nothing to do with his investigation,” he said.

Police continue to hunt killer after Man, 36, dies in Darwin CBD stabbing

Police are continuing to appeal for help from the public to catch a killer after a man was stabbed to death outside a popular Darwin city supermarket at the weekend.

Investigators say the 36-year-old was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital after being stabbed in the stomach outside Woolworths in Cavenagh St in the early hours of Saturday morning and later died of his injuries.

On Monday Morning, an NT Police spokesman said officers were yet to make any arrests and were still appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward.

Man dies after stabbing in Darwin CBD overnight

A man who was rushed to hospital after being stabbed in the stomach in the Darwin central business district overnight has died.

The 36-year-old was admitted to the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning but in a statement issued on Saturday afternoon police confirmed he had since died.

“Major crime detectives are continuing their investigations,” a spokesman said.

It comes after the Territory government toughened bail and weapons laws following the high-profile stabbing death of Darwin bottle shop worker Declan Laverty in March.

A petition started by Mr Laverty’s mother Samara and debated in parliament in August called for the government to adopt a nine-point plan to fix a “broken system”.

The petition, which has been signed by more than 26,000 people, calls for programs for at-risk youth, police wanding powers and better training for security guards – three areas the government has acted on since Mr Laverty’s death.

It also advocates for stronger laws on what constitutes a deadly weapon.

“My son will never smile at me, say ‘Hi mum, I love you’, give me one of his big hugs and hold on while I try and squirm away,” Ms Laverty said at the time.

“That scene of him being stabbed to death and managing to get to his phone and message his parents will forever be etched in my mind.

“I made a promise to Declan … I didn’t know then what that fight would look like but I promised him with all my heart and soul that I would fight with everything I had.”

It also follows a number of other stabbing deaths throughout the NT this year, including that of a 32-year-old man in Alice Springs who was killed outside the Todd Tavern in June.

In July, a 45-year-old woman also died after she was allegedly stabbed in the back by her partner at her home in Jilkminggan, 146km southeast of Katherine.

Man fighting for life after stabbing in Darwin CBD overnight

A man is fighting for life in the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital after he was stabbed in the stomach in the city centre overnight.

An NT Police spokesman said officers received a report the 36-year-old had been attacked on Cavanagh Street at about 12.30am on Saturday.

He said the man was taken to hospital in a critical condition and remained in intensive care as of 9.30am on Saturday.

A crime scene has been declared with the area cordoned off while major crime squad detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Anyone with any information or who may have witnessed the stabbing is urged to contact police on 131 444.

A man who did not want to be named said he saw “a lot of police” near a section of the street outside the Woolworths supermarket in the hours after the stabbing.

“It was probably around three in the morning, I was coming back from my friend’s place,” he said.

“I saw that the area was blocked off and I was wondering what was wrong because there were police on both sides (of the road).”
