THE Glennie School has kicked-off what will surely be a new era of sporting success.

Students, staff, local dignitaries, members of the community and a former Olympian were among the guests at the opening of the school's new $8 million sports centre.

Named after Toowoomba philanthropist and developer Clive Berghofer, the centre includes a circuit room for weight training, a spin bike room, two health and physical education classrooms, a staff room, change rooms and three multi-purpose courts.

The Glennie School sport captain Lily Black is one of many students looking forward to using the centre.

"It's a fantastic centre," Lily said.

"Everyone is really excited and can't wait to use the new facilities.

"I think it will benefit all our students because it provides so many opportunities.

"It doesn't matter if they just want to throw a ball around and have fun, or play serious sport, they can do that here.

Girls' praise Anzac spirit

"It's going to encourage more girls to try something new."

Lily's views are echoed by The Glennie School principal Kim Cohen.

"This new centre will help us to deliver our vision of developing in each Glennie girl the physical potential to be healthy and active in mind, body and spirit," Mrs Cohen said.

"Whether Glennie girls are playing sport competitively or socially, all girls from Prep to Year 12 now have a place to do that all year round.

"Sports, health, fitness and well-being activities play an important role in a holistic education program, and this purpose-built centre puts Glennie at the forefront of girls' education.

"As well as providing a space for the whole school community to come together in the one location, the new centre is enabling us to build on our connections with the wider Toowoomba and Darling Downs community by providing a modern facility for use by sporting organisations."

In addition to funding support from the Queensland Government through the Block Grant Authority, The Glennie School Foundation made a major donation to the new sports centre.

"My fellow foundation directors and I are extremely grateful to our generous foundation members and all of the donors that have supported our efforts to financially contribute to the construction of the new Sports Centre," The Glennie School Foundation Chair David Russell said.
