Jacinta Price and coalition party silent on her wearing MAGA hat

A usually outspoken Territory senator is staying mum on her choice of headwear – and so is her party. Find out why.

A firebrand NT Senator is staying mum about why she donned a hat with a controversial slogan penned by the US president, as a picture emerges of her wearing it only days after she tried to play down her comments to “make Australia great again”.

The picture, which shows Jacinta Price with her husband Colin Lillie wearing “make America great again” hats, were recirculating online only days after she – and her party – were trying to downplay her “make Australia great again” comment in WA.

Ms Price made the comment in Perth on Saturday, and when this masthead contacted her for comment about the hat, her office directed queries to the Coalitions party’s headquarters.

The party headquarters did not respond to queries by deadline.

In the picture, Ms Price is next to her husband, who is wearing a Santa hat embroidered with the slogan, while Ms Price is wearing a white and gold cap with the slogan.

The picture was taken during Christmas last year, and the duo is posing in front of a what appears to be a President Donald Trump Christmas decoration.

This masthead understands the pictures have since been deleted from the account they were originally posted.

However, her husband’s music page still shows him wearing the MAGA Santa hat in a video promoting a gig in Tamworth, posted on December 28.

In Perth, Ms Price was talking about her party’s candidates when she said she was “proud to be able to stand beside” them and “ensure that we can make Australia great again; that we can bring Australia back to its former glory, that we can get Australia back on track”.

When questioned on why she said “make Australia great again”, Ms Price said “if I said that, I don’t even realise I said that”, before calling the media “obsessed with Trump”.

Shortly after making the comment, federal Nationals party leader David Littleproud said it was a “slip of the tongue” during an “impromptu speech”.

In January, Ms Price was named shadow minister of government efficiency, which has been hailed as an echo of Elon Musk’s department of government efficiency in the US as part of Trump’s presidential cabinet.

Only weeks ago, President Trump announced sweeping tariffs which targeted Australia’s beef industry and its export to the US.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attempted to draw comparisons between opposition leader Peter Dutton’s coalition party and the Trump administration during his campaign launch on Saturday.
